FAQs

Q: What is the most important factor to consider when registering for dance classes? And why?
A: The professional certifications and experience of the instructor. As the ballroom dance profession in Canada is not regulated by governments, it is in the interest of the public to educate itself and make informed decisions. Please be aware of the fact that in Canada, someone can be a member of a dance organization without professional certifications.

Q: What are Professional Certifications?
A: Certifications with such prestigious organization as the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (I.S.T.D.), England, require that the dance teacher be trained and examined, using the strictest criteria, at progressively advanced levels: Student Teacher, Associate, Licentiate and Fellowship.

Q: What is the relevance of professional certifications to students?
A The instructor’s certifications with professional bodies such as the ISTD., U.K. and in Canada, the Canadian DanceSport Federation assure the students of the following:

  • Highest quality of instruction
  • Graded system of training
  • Professional integrity of the dance instructor
  • Continuous professional development of the instructor
  • Respect of copyrights and monetary compensation for the use of dance music to the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN)

Q: I am learning to dance for recreational purposes; do I need a Certified Dance Instructor?
A: Absolutely. This is to guarantee that one learns correctly and does not develop wrong or bad habits. Improper dance techniques could also lead to bodily injuries for young and older dancers alike.

Q: Is a partner required for one to join a group class?
A: No, as the emphasis is to individually learn the proper techniques and to acquire the necessary dance skills to facilitate dancing with a partner.

Q: What does one wear to a dance class?
A: Comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement. For children, tidy clothing and hairdo should be observed. For footwear, dress shoes for Beginners and later, proper dance shoes are recommended.
